Over three billion data records worldwide have been lost since 2013 according to the Breach Level Index (www.breachlevelindex.com), including many passwords, bank data and customer details stored by online vendors. The Berlin-based IT security expert Steganos Software (www.steganos.com) has upgraded its privacy and data protection application, Steganos Privacy Suite, with additional features so that PC and Internet users can now profit from even more protection against data theft and online snooping. Today’s newly released Steganos Privacy Suite 17 features tracking protection, an ad blocker, and options for browser anonymization. Other new features include Intel hardware acceleration for fast encryption of large data volumes, sparse file safes, and notifications for password expiries. The software solution is compatible with the latest Windows 10 operating system.

ps-box-rightSteganos Privacy Suite 17 combines proven solutions for digital data protection from Steganos into one attractive package. With this highly professional security software, users can securely encrypt their sensitive data, passwords and emails, and proactively guard their privacy when browsing online. The package contains Steganos Safe, Steganos Password Manager, and a number of interesting extra features like Steganos TraceDestructor, Steganos Shredder and the Steganos Crypt & Hide function.

Tracking protection, anti-spam filter and browser anonymization

“A lot of folks still think that installing anti-virus software is all it takes to protect themselves against criminal online activity. They’re wrong. Passwords and other sensitive data can get lost in a variety of ways. In addition, invasive public authorities and nosy corporations are increasingly tracking all of our activity online.  This is why we’ve significantly enhanced the online privacy protection features in our 17th edition of Steganos Privacy Suite,” explains Steganos Managing Director Gabriel F. Yoran.

Highly secure AES-XEX 384-bit encryption with hardware acceleration

Since version 16, the Steganos Safe integrated in Steganos Privacy Suite has implemented AES-XEX, an algorithm that has never been cracked and currently offers the maximum key length of 384 bits for data encryption. With Steganos Privacy Suite 17, Intel hardware acceleration has now also been integrated in the safe feature. This allows even large volumes of data to be quickly encrypted — and they’ll be uncrackable.

Sparse safe files

New in the 17th edition: the size of safes for data encryption automatically scales on local storage media or in the cloud.  Users can now use their storage space even more effectively because the safe will always only take up as much room as it needs for the data it contains. And the size of the safe no longer has to be manually adjusted as its data volume increases.

Password manager with new convenient features

The Steganos Password Manager integrated in Steganos Privacy Suite lets users generate highly secure passwords, manage them, and automatically insert them. Automatic password expiry notifications provide additional comfort in Steganos Privacy Suite. Version 17 users also no longer have to use a cloud service when they want to access their passwords on a mobile device. Apple mobile device owners can log into the app with their Touch ID.

For over a decade, Steganos products have stood for reliable privacy protection. “There are absolutely no back doors, and Steganos stores no master passwords or skeleton keys,” emphasizes Yoran.

The VPN clients Steganos Online Shield VPN and OkayFreedom VPN can recognize DNS hijacking network attacks, and will warn VPN users of them. There are no data leaks via IPv6 when Steganos VPN products are used. This was announced by the Berlin-based IT security specialist Steganos Software after reports of security gaps in 14 VPN services gave rise to uncertainty.

“Neither Steganos Online Shield VPN, nor OkayFreedom VPN allow an unprotected IPv6 connection. Both applications immediately recognize DNS hijacking. Steganos customers can rest assured that our solutions are securely protecting them from hackers and data thieves,” said Gabriel F. Yoran, Managing Director of Steganos.

Doubts arose about the security of VPN clients when a number of relevant IT media cited a technical article which had been published in April 2015 by a joint research team from the universities of Rome and London. Within the scope of their project, the researchers had investigated the effect of IPv6 issues on VPN clients, and discovered shortcomings in all of the services they tested.

Up to now, IPv6 had played hardly any role in the daily practice of VPN users. Problems only arise when users have no detailed knowledge of whether they are using IPv6 when they’re online. This is the case in public hotspots for example.

“Here at Steganos, we don’t want our VPN users to have to worry about whether they’re using IPv4 or IPv6 on the Internet. That’s why, for the present, we decided to disallow IPv6 for the duration of any VPN connectivity. We’re already working on developing a sustainable solution which would allow IPv6 without compromising the security of the VPN connection.

DNS hijacking is another attack scenario described by the researchers, which is unrelated to IPv6. If a hacker is able to trick the router and switch his own DNS server into the local network, he can not only see what pages the user is loading, but also mine and log data out of the actual VPN tunnel.

Steganos VPN products are capable of immediately identifying such DNS hijackings. The software enforces a specific DNS server for duration of the VPN connection and can therefore recognize whether there is another device on the local network within the same IP range of the Steganos DNS server.  If so, it assumes the local network is compromised. Steganos VPN products then disallow the VPN connection and warn the user.

Summer vacation is here. Your suitcases are packed and of course your mobile is coming along as your trusty travel companion. After all, having the Internet in your pocket or beach bag makes a lot of things easier when you’re on the road: posting your favorite snapshots to Facebook, picking the best routes in your maps app, or reserving a rental car for that daytrip. And because so many cafes, restaurants and hotels have public hotspots, it’s not even expensive. But be careful! WIFI access is often unencrypted, making it a popular point of attack for hackers and data thieves. That guy sitting at the table next to yours? He could be using the insecure connection to pry into your personal data like emails, passwords or chat protocols. The IT security specialist Steganos Software GmbH therefore recommends vacationers take action to protect themselves from attacks like this. How? With a VPN client like Steganos Online Shield for iOS and Android. Nice side effect: With an activated VPN app, you can even watch your favorite TV stations when you’re abroad.

“Just because you’re going on vacation doesn’t mean that credit card thieves and email fraudsters are taking time off, too. On the contrary! You have to be particularly careful when you’re traveling. Everyone should take the initiative to protect themselves from snoops by installing the appropriate software on their mobile devices,” explains Gabriel F. Yoran, Managing Director of Steganos Software GmbH, a Berlin-based IT firm specialized in security solutions.

Once activated, a VPN client like Steganos Online Shield VPN establishes an encrypted virtual private network (VPN) on your smartphone or tablet. All of your traffic is routed through this data tunnel and thus hidden from prying eyes so that any hackers on the same wireless network cannot log your data. Plus, you are 2 also surfing anonymously if you use an activated VPN app. The software switches your IP address, thus hiding your identity. In addition, Steganos Online Shield VPN can identify other devices on the same WIFI. This means the app can quickly recognize and block any potential threats.

And for another annoyance on vacation, a VPN app like Steganos Online Shield VPN is an elegant solution: there might be a important game on at home, or your favorite show, and the hotel you’re staying at only shows regional TV stations. With a VPN app, you can toggle an IP address from the country of your choice when you go online, and thus navigate around any restrictive country settings to watch what you want to watch.

The installation of a VPN client can also protect mobile network users from data theft and online espionage. To minimize the number of potential security gaps for hackers, Steganos recommends updating your operating system and all apps before you leave on vacation. If you’re taking your laptop with you on your trip, you should also encrypt your hard drive. If it gets stolen, it can be located remotely, disabled, and all of the data on it can be deleted. Make sure to also bring along the customer service number of your mobile carrier and your bank so that telephones and credit cards can be quickly disabled and blocked if worse comes to worst. Despite all of these precautions, travellers on vacation should still try to avoid activities that could be critical to their security, such as online banking and shopping online.

Today, Steganos presents an iOS version of its proven VPN software Steganos Online Shield VPN. The new app protects iPhones and iPads from hackers and data spies by enabling iOS users to surf using an encrypted mobile connection.

Steganos Online Shield VPN for iOS“Never have there been as many attacks on mobile devices as last year. Smart phones store private photos, contacts, passwords, mails as well as chats and connect through any WiFi network. Protection from data theft is more important than ever. In order to expand mobile security to an even wider audience, we are following up the Android version of our excellent Steganos Online Shield VPN with a version for iOS devices“, says Gabriel F. Yoran, founder and general manager of Steganos Software GmbH.

Steganos recommends: Anyone who wants to safely surf in public WiFi networks is best protected using an encrypted virtual private network (VPN). Steganos Online Shield for iOS VPN can now establish such a VPN on iPhones and iPads. Once activated, the app directs the entire data traffic flow through the secure Steganos server.

Additionally, the software hides user’s identity by exchanging the IP address. This makes it impossible for hackers and spies in the same network to obtain the user’s data. Regardless of whether the user is surfing at the office, the library, a café, the airport or train station, the encrypted connection protects data traffic flow of all apps. Steganos Online Shield VPN for iOS also identifies other devices in the WiFi network; potential hackers and spies are thus blocked. This is how all WiFi networks are now made safe for iPhone and iPad users worldwide.

However, it is not only the use of unsecured WiFi hotspots that endangers digital privacy, but also the many apps that transfer unencrypted data traffic. This also holds the door wide open for hackers to the most sensitive data. Steganos Online Shield VPN for iOS also closes this glaring security hole via secure SSL/TLS encryption, regardless of whether the user is connected through a WiFi or wireless network (3G, 4G/ LTE, Edge, GPRS, etc.).

Steganos Online Shield VPN for iOS is free of advertisements and free of charge for up to 500 MB of data monthly. Steganos Online Shield VPN Premium allows unlimited data volume and includes protection for up to five devices (Windows, iOS, Android). Steganos Online Shield VPN Premium is available directly in iTunes as a year’s license for an introductory price of 24.99 $ or as a monthly subscription for 2.99 $.

  • Determining of one individual VPN user’s data is impossible for German software company Steganos
  • VPN services interweaves users’ data irreversibly
  • Legal admissibility of user data disclosure upon court order stays questionable

dataretentieMass data retention is supposed to make a comeback in Germany in a slightly rearranged form. Providing anonymization services such as Steganos Online Shield VPN and OkayFreedom VPN, we declare data retention to be unfeasible concerning our VPN users: Both services interweave metadata of a huge number of users in a way that cannot be untangled. Therefore, an individual user cannot be identified with one IP-address and personal data can neither be determined nor passed to state or police.

In case of a reintroduction of mass data retention in Germany, investigation authorities could request Steganos to pass data regarding one IP-address, a given date and a certain time for purposes of an individual’s criminal prosecution. Yet, it would be impossible to identify any user of Steganos Online Shield VPN as well as of OkayFreedom VPN with a certain IP-address, as an individual user’s set of data is irreversibly mingled with the sets of data of all other users who are connected to our VPN network at that time. We were only able to pass a list of user-IPs, who have been connected to a certain VPN-IP at the given time. This means that Steganos cannot retrace any individual user with that information, but only give out an amount of IP-addresses from several internet providers (T-Online, 1&1, Unitymedia, etc.) that could contain the person sought.

“If the release of these data upon court order is legally admissible, is still totally unclear. By being forced to grant access to information of other internet users who have been connected to the VPN network at the same time, these users’ personal right to privacy would be heavily infringed. All of them would be placed under general suspicion. Thus, it would stay questionable, if we had to comply with the order”, states Gabriel Yoran, Managing Director of Steganos Software GmbH.

VPN service conceals real IP-addresses

As provider of anonymization services such as Steganos Online Shield VPN and OkayFreedom VPN we make sure that every data traffic is directed from the user’s device to a Steganos VPN server via an encrypted tunnel. The VPN server assigns a new IP-address for identification and establishes communication with the websites the user wants to visit. There are two big advantages: All data that are exchanged between user and VPN server are encrypted and cannot be accessed by third parties. Furthermore, users can just be traced back to their VPN server. Instead of their real IP-addresses one can only see the VPN service’s IPs.

No data retention for users of VPN server

Steganos Online Shield VPN and OkayFreedom VPN neither store called up addresses or contents, nor the IP-addresses that are allocated to the user by the VPN service. Also the users own IP-address, with which Steganos Online Shield VPN and OkayFreedom VPN is used, is not being saved – according to current privacy policy regarding both products.

  • Steganos Partnered up with Telekom for its Security Offer “Made in Germany”
  • Steganos Online Shield VPN is Part of the Free Protection Package
  • Program Collection Unites Four German IT Providers

Bild_Gratis_SchutzpaketIn cooperation with Telekom the German Software Company Steganos contributes to the program package for protection of PCs, smartphones and tablets, which was presented at the IT event CeBIT 2015. The free-of-charge program collection contains the Steganos Online Shield VPN as well as software of three other German IT security providers (Avira, Strato, Secomba). By closing all main security gaps, it addresses consumers as well as small and medium-sized companies.

Steganos Online Shield VPN – Surfing safely and privately

Within the Telekom security package “Made in Germany” Steganos provides the important function of encrypting Internet connections. Users can browse safely and privately with Steganos Online Shield VPN. The program encrypts all Internet traffic using the highly-secure AES 256-bit procedure. The Steganos Servers, placed all over the world, protect personal data from attacks and surveillance in all kinds of public networks – whether WiFi, LAN or mobile network (3G, LTE/4G, EDGE, GPRS). With Steganos Online Shield its users can surf anonymously whenever they want to, as the program conceals online identities and safeguards personal data against unauthorized access. Furthermore, the solution also conceals the IP addresses of devices, so hackers can no longer identify them as potential victims.

“We are looking forward to the strategic cooperation with Telekom. It opens an additional channel for us to provide Internet users with a VPN tool, that enables them to surf freely and to circumvent regionally blocked content, but with the highest security standards available”, says Stephan Hechler, Managing Director of Steganos Software GmbH. “Not only revelations by Snowden, but also calls for prohibition of encryption on national and international level make many users feel insecure. Together with the Telekom and other IT providers, we offer them protection for their smartphones and PCs in one single package – made in Germany.”

Steganos Online Shield VPN being the current test winner of the comparison portal Netzsieger complements the Telekom security package. Within the comparative test of VPN services, the product achieved the best ranks in the categories: security, performance, usability and customer support.

The free offering is available to download with the market launch at www.telekom.de/schutzpaket. A premium version of the offering with additional functions is planned.
